A criminal background check is a safety measure undertaken by employers at the time of recruiting, landlords at the time of fixing a tenant and businessmen before they take on an associate. It provides information on whether the individual is trustworthy enough. These checks can be carried out online, as there are a lot of databases available with the appropriate information.
For employers, it is their duty to ensure safety of the workplace. For this, it becomes imperative for them to conduct a background check on the employees. Sometimes, making a check can reveal a tendency to be violent. In places like day care centers, hospitals and nursing homes extra caution needs to be exercised when they appoint personnel. If the individual’s record shows that they were involved in child molestation or drug abuse, the institution may reconsider appointing them. They would certainly not like to be involved in litigation resulting from the behavior of their employees. In many states, the homeowners’ association takes care to conduct a criminal background check on people who move into their community, to ensure the safety of their area.
A criminal record gives information about the individual’s name, nicknames they may go by, gender and ethnicity, date of birth and age, offenses and dates on which committed, dispositions or convictions with dates. This information is accessible from county and state criminal court records, from federal fugitive files, the DOC or Department of Corrections files, prison records, sex offender registration databases.
